Junior & Child Car Seat Buying Guide & FAQ's

Ready for the next stage? Find quick answers about child car seats, high-back boosters, Group 2/3 seats, R129 height requirements and choosing the right seat as your child grows.

What is a junior or child car seat?

Junior and child car seats are designed for older children who have progressed beyond their earlier harnessed car seat. Many are high-back boosters that position the vehicle's seat belt correctly across the child and provide additional head and side-impact protection.

What is a Group 2/3 car seat?

Group 2/3 is the older R44 classification for child car seats designed for children weighing 15–36kg. Modern R129 child seats are instead classified primarily by height, with many high-back boosters approved from around 100–150cm.

When can my child use a high-back booster seat?

This depends on the individual seat. Many current R129 high-back boosters are approved from around 100cm, often approximately 3.5–4 years. Always follow the manufacturer's minimum height and age requirements rather than moving your child based on age alone.

What is the difference between a harnessed car seat and a high-back booster?

A harnessed car seat secures the child using an integrated harness, while a high-back booster positions the vehicle's three-point seat belt correctly across the child. Multi-stage seats may convert from a harnessed seat into a high-back booster as your child grows.

Does a high-back booster need ISOFIX?

Not always. Some high-back boosters use ISOFIX connectors together with the vehicle's seat belt, while others can be installed using the vehicle belt alone. Always follow the installation instructions for your chosen seat and vehicle.
