Do you need a pushchair, pram or buggy? They all sound similar but in fact are very different things when we look at each of their definitions.

Choosing the correct pram start with learning what you need.

A pram is designed for newborn babies or younger babies. They come with either a suitable from birth pushchair unit, or a carrycot allowing the baby to lie flat and is usually parent facing. Meaning you can see your little one as you walk!

A pushchair is more likely to be for older babies and toddler. It more often will not have a carrycot and just be a single unit on its own which tends to be forward facing/ world facing.

A buggy is more lightweight, it normally has a collapsible frame allowing it to be folded and stored in more compact places.

What features should you be looking for?

Most brands offer a wide range of models that are best for country living, with rougher terrains and better wheels for the conditions the pram will be in or best for city living, which would be more compact, better suited for the hustle and bustle of living in a bigger town or city.

If you want to take the pram off road for walking while wanting it still able to be suitable for living in urban areas, then you may wish to get an all-terrain pram. These are a catch all pram that can cope in any environment.

If you are into your travelling and take a lot of trains, planes and other modes of transport to explore or even just to travel in general, then you may wish to get a compact pram that can fold down to cabin size or is just lightweight and easy for you to store.

If you are into your healthy living and want to run or walk a lot with your child, then you may opt for a sportier pram which caters to this lifestyle.

Choosing a pram is best done by suiting the pram to your lifestyle and needs. If you’re planning another child, then you may want one that can adapt to become a double pram for example. We would recommend choosing the pram you want but basing your decision around what your lifestyle is.

What is needed for a newborn?

If you are getting a pushchair that is for a newborn then you need to get one that:

• Has a carrycot or
• Has a lie-flat car seat

This is essential as the baby will need to lie flat for healthy development. If your baby is not lying flat in the pram then their breathing can be compromised.

Carrycots have become much more advanced as brands continue to innovate. You can get carrycots that fold up for when you are done using them, carrycots that can be adapted to become the seat unit and carrycots which are suitable for overnight sleeping too.

How much should I spend on a pushchair?

This depends on your budget and how long you plan to use the pushchair for. With models ranging between £200 and £2000+ it can be a bit overwhelming when you see them all in front of you.

It's best to see what exactly you need first. If there are any brands you like or if there is anything that you need specifically, like a car seat or a carrycot.

What accessories do I need?

Most pram packages will already cover the basics for you. With most offering adapters, rain covers and UV hoods already.

If you have a pram and are buying your car seat separately we would recommend making sure the adaptors are include and if so, that they allow for your chosen car seat to be attached as if not, then you will need to purchase adaptors also.

Things you may which to consider are based upon your environment. If its cold, then you may wish to get footmuffs and fleece liners for your pram. You may need an additional rain cover for your car seat or even consider getting a clip-on toy which are a great way to keep baby entertained.
